War Cry – Brian McClellan

On the high plains, war is life.

Teado has been a part of the war effort for as long as he can remember. His childhood was spent in the aircraft and ammunition factories until his power manifested. Now he is on the front lines, fighting the great war as one of the monstrous shapeshifting wizards that are all but extinct after decades of battle.

Behind enemy lines, Teado’s special operations platoon plays a deadly game of cat and mouse, sabotaging and demoralizing the enemy. But food is scarce. The enemy has pushed their main forces back further and their requests for resupply have gone unanswered. They will make one last dangerous bid for survival and, maybe, change the course of the war forever.

This is a tricky one to review, coming in at under 100 pages!! It’s certainly quite a change from Brian McClellan’s EPIC Powder Mage trilogy, all of which have that comfortingly hefty/500+ page feel to them!!

This is the story of Teado…he’s a shape-shifting soldier, and his platoon is effectively stranded. When a resupply mission goes south, Teado has to fight his way back to his friends. This little novella moves like a fucking freight train…not a lot of information is given to the reader…the specifics of the war are somewhat vague, but that’s secondary to the vivid & grim world McLellan has created. A world of Wizards…Changers & Smiling Toms.

I read this in one sitting…there’s no chapter breaks, and like I mentioned, the pacing of this book is fucking intense!! War Cry also features a first person narrator, another difference from the Powder Mage books. I really enjoyed this so damn much…a very unique & thrilling tale, packed into a very small book!!

Thank you to TOR.COM Publishing for sending me a copy!! War Cry releases on August 28th!!
