VOIDBREAKER – David Dalglish

Monsters have retaken the capital city of Londheim and claimed it for themselves. Humanity, fearful of being pushed out for good, has reacted with violence and destruction, and peace between the two races seems all but impossible. Devin will need to bring all his skills to bear in order to find a solution. But the greatest threat to humanity’s safety may well be closer than he expects. Because his sister is the most powerful priestess the world has ever seen . . . and she’s fighting for the monsters.

The fate of all races, human and magical, rests in their hands, and the only person standing in their way is each other.

Hey, look at me go, getting some momentum on finishing series/trilogies! I don’t typically have reading “goals” of any kind, but I’m really planning to make 2022 a year where I finish a bunch of series/trilogies that I’ve started.

VOIDBREAKER is the third book in David Dalglish’s trilogy, THE KEEPERS. And oof…he pulls out all the stops on this one, for real. This is just an emotionally resonant & action-packed end to a trilogy that captivated me from the first chapter of the first book, to the last chapter in the last book.

Despite the best efforts of Devin & co., tensions are running high between the human & non-human inhabitants of this world. Things feel fractured, unstable, and on the verge of boiling over. VOIDBREAKER moves fast overall, but the last hundred pages (or so) of this book had my eyes popping out of my head, like… goddamn, hold on for dear life, things are gonna get wild.

There are many character arcs in this trilogy, and each of them feels so authentic & ultimately satisfying. While keeping up with an almost dizzying number of POVs, certain characters really emerged as favorites for me.

Adria really became a focal point for the entire story in VOIDBREAKER. There’s some really interesting & challenging things that happen as far as Adria is concerned, and it leaves the reader feeling a little unbalanced. I loved what Dalglish did with this character overall, and the evolution of her powers is just…fucking intense.

The dynamics between Evelyn and her son, Logarius, were also a big highlight in this book. The tension between them is palpable, with Evelyn desperately trying to bring Logarius back from the edge of total chaos, and him resisting her with everything he’s got. Their story is super fucking sad to me. Evelyn is one of the more unique characters in this trilogy, and I especially looked forward to her action scenes, which are typically ferocious.

I think Janus has to be considered one of the more memorable characters in this trilogy, and certainly one of the more compelling/entertaining villains in recent memory. He gets…rather unhinged in this one, so fair warning. In my review for SOULKEEPER I wrote “this guy is a fucking sociopathic killer…but he does make some good points here and there.” And while I stand by that, he is unquestionably An Extremely Bad Dude.

I’ve been stuck at various points of writing this review for any number of reasons, and I’m still not sure I’ve done this book any real justice. Either way, THE KEEPERS is such a solid fantasy trilogy… it’s unabashedly geeky about magic & monsters, and these books are very much about finding a bright light when things can’t get any darker. David Dalglish writes with his heart on his sleeve, and I’m really excited to see what’s next from him. I’ve also picked up some of his earlier work to check out too!
